Navigating Clutch/Brake Operation in Harsh Environmental Conditions

Chemicals, saltwater, food particles, heat, dust, and electrical corrosion are just a few of the many issues that can cause clutches and brakes to fail prematurely. Nobody wants to have the conversation about lost production time, growing cost concerns, or system disruptions after a failure has occurred. The strength of these components is in the information collected over years of service in hazardous environments and applying this knowledge to future clutch/brake technologies.

Altra's Aftermarket Expertise Gives New Life to Aging Wind Turbines

Many of the wind turbine generators (WTGs) installed across Europe as a result of the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC are beginning to run out of maintenance warranty. This deadline doesn’t have to be a burden on WTG operators: it can turn into an opportunity to increase wind turbines’ service lives and improve performances, further reducing their carbon footprint.

How to Select a Clutch or Brake

At the most basic level, the designer will identify if the application calls for a clutch, a brake or a combination clutch and brake. A clutch would be used in applications where it is desirable to engage/disengage the load and motor while leaving the motor to run all of the time. When a clutch is used the load will be allowed to coast to a stop.

Cotton Baler

Warner Electric Custom-Designed Clutch/Brake for Cotton Baler

A major agriculture OEM required an electric clutch/brake solution for a baler incorporated on their cotton picker. The combination clutch/brake is positioned on the main pulley-driven roller which, in turn, drives two idler rollers, the wrap belt roller and the wrap roll. When fully rolled and wrapped, the 8 ft. wide cotton bales are 7.5 ft. in diameter and weigh up to 5,000 lbs.

Actuation Matters

When designers develop machine functions that include friction clutches/brakes, too many make the incorrect assumption that electric clutches/brakes provide the same performance capabilities as the pneumatic units.

For the majority of applications, this is simply not true. There are differences, and in some cases these differences are significant.
