CMS Clutch Brake for Garden Tractors

To meet market demand, a leading garden tractor OEM required an electric clutch/brake solution to replace a mechanical clutch on a line of their tractors.

The clutch/brake is used to control the rotation of belt driven implements including mower blades, snow blowers, etc. The clutch/brake provides the ability to engage/disengage the implement from engine power by simply pushing a button vs. using a manual lever. This feature quickly stops the rotation (within three to seven seconds, depending on the application) of the implement/mower blades compared to letting the implement rotation come to a coasting stop.

To meet the customer’s application requirements, Warner Electric provided a Commercial Mag Stop clutch combined with a spot brake and integral pulley. The model is designed specifically for garden tractors with up to 37 HP motors and 96” mowing decks. The clutch has a static torque of 200 ft.lbs. and features Airgap adjustment to extend life, an overmolded coil for increased contamination and vibration resistance and integral wire connector and hub key for enhanced serviceability.

The spot brake, with Neodymium permanent magnets, provides consistent brake torque with reduced wear for increased life.
